Die Ligue 1 ist die höchste Spielklasse im französischen Fußball.
Sie wurde zur Saison 3 gegründet.
Jeder Verein der Liga tritt in Hin- und Rückspielen gegen jeden anderen Verein der Ligue 1 an. Die Mannschaft mit den meisten Punkten aus allen Spielen wird französischer Meister. Aus der Ligue 1 steigen die letzten vier Mannschaften in die Ligue 2 ab.

Aufsteiger
Aus der Ligue 2 steigen jede Saison der Zweitligameister sowie der Zweit-, Dritt- und Viertplatzierte in die Ligue 1 auf. Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher aufgestiegen:
Rekordaufsteiger sind FC Sochaux und Olympique Ales mit jeweils fünf Aufstiegen, gefolgt von AS Saint Etienne, RC Strasbourg und Olympique Marseille mit jeweils vier Aufstiegen.
Absteiger
Aus der Ligue 2 steigen jede Saison die vier schlechtesten Mannschaften in die Ligue 2 ab. Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher abgestiegen:
Rekordabsteiger sind FC Sochaux und RC Strasbourg mit jeweils fünf Abstiegen, gefolgt von AS Saint Etienne, SM Caen, Olympique Marseille, Olympique Ales und EA Guingamp mit jeweils vier Abstiegen.
