Die Ligue 1 ist die höchste Spielklasse im französischen Fußball.
Sie wurde zur Saison 3 gegründet.
Jeder Verein der Liga tritt in Hin- und Rückspielen gegen jeden anderen Verein der Ligue 1 an. Die Mannschaft mit den meisten Punkten aus allen Spielen wird französischer Meister. Aus der Ligue 1 steigen die letzten vier Mannschaften in die Ligue 2 ab.

Aufsteiger
Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher aufgestiegen:
Rekordaufsteiger sind FC Sochaux und Olympique Ales mit jeweils fünf Aufstiegen, gefolgt von AS Saint Etienne, RC Strasbourg, Olympique Marseille und EA Guingamp mit jeweils vier Aufstiegen.
Folgenden Teams gelang es noch nie, in die Ligue 1 aufzusteigen: FC Gueugnon, FC Toulouse, FC Martigues, FC Pau, Olympique Nimes, ES Viry Chatillon.
Absteiger
Aus der Ligue 2 steigen jede Saison die vier schlechtesten Mannschaften in die Ligue 2 ab. Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher abgestiegen:
Rekordabsteiger sind FC Sochaux, RC Strasbourg, Olympique Marseille und Olympique Ales mit jeweils fünf Abstiegen, gefolgt von AS Saint Etienne, SM Caen und EA Guingamp mit jeweils vier Abstiegen.
Von den 18 Gründungsmitgliedern der Ligue 1 mussten nur drei Vereine bislang noch nicht absteigen: RC Lens, Girondins Bordeaux, AJ Auxerre
