Nach der wenig berauschenden Saison 41 hatte Ex-Meistertrainer Sergio Pinto seinen Kredit bei den Verantwortlichen des FC Porto aufgebraucht. Der Vertrag mit dem 64-jährigen wurde nicht verlängert. Doch wen Joernie als seinen Nachfolger präsentierte, war dann doch eine gehörige Überraschung. Der neue Trainer hatte nämlich keine lange Liste von Erfolgen aufzuweisen, sondern war - ohne dass man ihm deswegen zu nahe treten muss - ein doch recht mittelmäßiger Fußballlehrer. Vor vielen Jahren hatte er einmal mit CD Fatima den Aufstieg in die Primeira Liga geschafft. Das war aber auch schon alles, was an Positivem in seiner Trainervita stand. Zuletzt war er beim FK Sarajevo unter Vertrag und konnte den bosnischen Klub in der SOE-Superliga immerhin auf Rang 7 führen. Der Grund, weshalb Portos Manager den bereits 67-jährigen Rui Costa holte, war wohl eher eine Rückbesinnung auf den Anfang von Joernies Tätigkeit beim FC Porto. Als Joernie als Manager bei den Dragoes anheuerte, ließ Rui Costa beim FC Porto gerade seine glanzvolle Profikarriere als Spieler ausklingen. Joernie war damals sehr beeindruckt von der Persönlichkeit Costas und der Kontakt zu ihm blieb auch nach seinem Karriereende und seinem Einstieg in die Trainerlaufbahn erhalten. Doch ob solche Sentimentalitäten das richtige Kriterium für eine Trainerauswahl sind, wird sich erst noch zeigen müssen. Fakt war allerdings auch, dass mögliche Kandidaten für das Traineramt nicht gerade Schlange gestanden sind. Weit verbreitet war die Anschauung, dass die beste Zeit der Dragoes erst einmal der Vergangenheit angehört und mit der aktuellen Truppe keine Meriten zu gewinnen seien. Rui Costa störte das nicht. Denn seine Verpflichtung als Chefcoach beim ehemaligen Klub war für ihn natürlich der Höhepunkt seiner Trainerlaufbahn.

Nachdem italienische Trainer Cristiano Lucarelli nicht mehr damit zufrieden war, nur die B-Elf der Portista zu betreuen, beendete Joernie zum Ende der Saison 41 die Zusammenarbeit mit dem sehr erfolgreichen Fußballlehrer. Sein Nachfolger wurde der 45-jährige Alberto Cabral, ein alter Bekannter in Porto, denn er war schon einmal vier Jahre Coach vom FC Porto B. Nach einem wenig erfolgreichen Gastspiel in der Liga de Honra (beim FC Belenenses Lissabon) kehrte er in die IIa Divisao B zurück.
