Der FC St. Gallen ist ein Schweizer Fussballverein aus der Stadt St. Gallen. Er wurde am 1879 gegründet und ist damit der älteste noch bestehende Fussballverein in der Schweiz.
St. Gallen (schweizerdeutsch Sanggale, französisch Saint-Gall, italienisch San Gallo, rätoromanisch Sogn Gagl) ist eine Stadt mit rd. 74.000 Einwohnern. Sie liegt auf 700 m Höhe an der Steinach, einem Fluss, der in den Bodensee mündet. St. Gallen wurde im 7. Jahrhundert gegründet und gilt heute als das kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Zentrum der Ostschweiz. Die Stadt liegt an mehreren Hauptverkehrsachsen und gilt als Tor ins Appenzellerland. Touristisch interessant ist die Stadt aufgrund der Stiftskirche und der Stiftsbibliothek, von der UNESCO in die Liste des Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. St. Gallen ist auch für seine Stickereien bekannt. Das Schweizer Bundesverwaltungsgericht (BVGer) hat in St. Gallen seinen Sitz. Den Namen hat St. Gallen vom Wandermönch Gallus, weswegen sie auch Gallusstadt genannt wird.
