Der SSC Neapel (offiziell: Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli S.p.A., kurz S.S.C. Napoli) ist ein italienischer Fußballverein aus Neapel.
Der SSC Napoli gilt traditionell als eines der Aushängeschilder Süditaliens im Fußball. In Italien wird die Mannschaft oft als „Azzurri" („die Blauen“) oder auch „Partenopei" (in Anlehnung an die gleichnamigen antike Stadt in der Magna Graecia, die als die Keimzelle der späteren Neapolis und des heutigen Neapels gilt) bezeichnet.
Neapel (italienisch Napoli) ist mit knapp einer Million Einwohnern die drittgrößte Stadt Italiens. Die Hauptstadt der Region Kampanien ist ein wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum Süditaliens. Die Metropolregion hat bis zu 4,4 Millionen Einwohner. Viele Neapolitaner sprechen das stark vom Standarditalienischen abweichende Neapolitanisch.
Die ursprüngliche griechische Siedlung trug den Namen Neapolis („Neustadt“). Später geriet sie unter römische Herrschaft. Vom Spätmittelalter bis zum 18. Jahrhundert gehörte Neapel zu den größten Städten Europas. Seine politische Geschichte ist über weite Strecken von Fremdherrschaft geprägt, zudem war es die Hauptstadt süditalienischer Reiche.
In den inneren Stadtteilen findet man zahlreiche historische Bauten und Kulturdenkmäler; 1995 wurde die gesamte Altstadt zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Das heterogene Stadtbild bietet Vorstädte mit riesigen Wohnkomplexen und weiten Flächen im Kontrast zu den engen und stark frequentierten Gassen der Altstadt. Während in den Stadtteilen westlich des Zentrums der Reichtum konzentriert ist, findet man in den inneren Bezirken und der Altstadt teilweise Überbevölkerung und ökonomisch rückständige Gebiete. Die soziale Lage der Vorstädte ist unterschiedlich, es handelt sich teils um Arbeiterviertel, teils um im Zuge des sozialen Wohnungsbaus entstandene Satellitenstädte, teils aber auch um rurale Landschaften. Ein großes Problem ist die überdurchschnittlich hohe Arbeitslosigkeit.
