Die Ethniki Katigoria ist die höchste Spielklasse im griechischen Fußball.
Sie wurde zur Saison 12 gegründet.
Jeder Verein der Liga tritt in Hin- und Rückspielen gegen jeden anderen Verein der Ethniki Katigoria an. Die Mannschaft mit den meisten Punkten aus allen Spielen wird griechischer Meister. Aus der Ethniki Katigoria steigen die letzten drei Mannschaften in die Ethniki Katigoria 2 ab.

Auch bei den Absteigern kann man keine Rekordabsteiger ausfindig machen. Höchstens Lyttos Ergotelis, Proodeftiki Nikaia und Panachaiki Patras, die drei Mannschaften sind die einzigsten, die bisher 2mal (zweimal) die Liga wechseln mussten.
