Der Verein wurde 1908 als Associazione Sportiva Bari, kurz AS Bari, gegründet. Der Verein ging 2014 in Insolvenz und wurde zunächst als FC Bari 1908 und aktuell als SSC Bari weitergeführt. Der Klub wird auch als "I Galletti" (die Gockel) und "I Biancorossi" (die Weiß-Roten) bezeichnet.
Die italienische Stadt Bari hat ca. 315.000 Einwohner und ist die Hauptstadt der Region Apulien. Mit dem Hafen von Bari ist sie eine bedeutende Hafenstadt an der Adria und mit der Universität Bari auch Universitätsstadt. Bari hat eine wechselhafte Geschichte. Sie war griechisch, gehörte dann zum Römischen Reich, fiel dann zunächst an die Goten, dann an das das Byzantinische Reich. 1071 eroberten die Normannen die Stadt, später gehörte Bari zum Königreich Neapel, seit 1860 gehört Bari zum italienischen Staatsgebiet.
