Die Regionalliga war die vierthöchste Spielklasse im deutschen Fußball und war von Saison 6 bis Saison 58 im BMO vertreten.
Jeder Verein der Liga tritt in Hin- und Rückspielen gegen jeden anderen Verein der Regionalliga an. Die drei Mannschaften mit den meisten Punkten aus allen Spielen steigen auf in die 3. Liga (zeitweise nur der erste, die ersten zwei, bzw. die ersten vier). Im Gegenzug steigen z.Zt. die letzten drei Teams der 3. Liga ab in die Regionalliga. Zur Zeit steigen aus der Regionalliga die drei letztplatzierten Mannschaften ab. Diese werden zum Teil - aber nicht immer - aus dem Spiel genommen. Zeitweise existierte eine fünfte Liga in die die Absteiger der Regionalliga abstiegen. Diese ist jedoch zur Zeit nicht aktiv. Entsprechend steigen Mannschaften derzeit nicht regulär in die Regionalliga auf sondern werden ggf. vom Ligaleiter bestimmt.
Aufsteiger
Aus der Regionalliga steigen jede Saison der Erstplatzierte sowie der Zweit- und Drittplatzierte in die 3. Liga auf (zeitweise auch nur Erst- und Zweitplatzierter, bzw. bis Viertplatzierter). In Saison 7 gab es offenbar keine Aufsteiger. Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher aufgestiegen:
Rekordaufsteiger ist somit Jena mit vier Aufstiegen.
Absteiger
Die Mannschaften, die am Ende der Saison auf den Plätzen 16 bis 18 stehen (zeitweilig auch 2 bzw. 4 Mannschaften), steigen sportlich ab, verlassen de facto jedoch nicht die Liga. Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher (sportlich) abgestiegen:
Rekordabsteiger ist somit Ahlen mit sieben Abstiegen.
Amateurmeister
In den Saisons 6 und 7 wurde in der Regionalliga (ehemals Oberliga) zudem die Amateurmeisterschaft ausgespielt, da diese Liga gleichzeitig die höchste Spielklasse war in der Amateurteams spielen konnten. Der Titel wurde später in der 3. Liga (ehemals Regionalliga) weitervergeben, zur Zeit bekommt ihn der Meister der Deutschen Amateurliga. In der Regionalliga (ehemals Oberliga) konnten ihn folgende Vereine erringen:
