Die 3. Liga ist die dritthöchste Spielklasse im deutschen Fußball und ist seit Saison 5 im BMO vertreten.
Jeder Verein der Liga tritt in Hin- und Rückspielen gegen jeden anderen Verein der 3. Liga an. Die drei Mannschaften mit den meisten Punkten aus allen Spielen steigen auf in die 2. Bundesliga (zeitweise die ersten zwei, bzw. die ersten vier). Im Gegenzug steigen die letzten drei (bzw. zwei) Teams der zweiten Bundesliga ab in die 3. Liga. Die letzten drei Vereine der Liga steigen ab in die Regionalliga (zeitweise auch der letzte, die letzten beiden, bzw. die letzten vier Vereine). Entsprechend steigen von dort z.Zt. die drei bestplatzierten Vereine auf.
Aufsteiger
Aus der 3. Liga steigen jede Saison der Erstplatzierte sowie der Zweit- und Drittplatzierte in die zweite Bundesliga auf (zeitweise auch nur Erst- und Zweitplatzierter, bzw. bis Viertplatzierter). Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher aufgestiegen:

Rekordaufsteiger sind Schwarz-Gelb Dresden und Wattenscheid, welche bereits dreimal den Sprung in die zweite Bundesliga schafften.
Absteiger
Die Mannschaften, die am Ende der Saison auf den Plätzen 16 bis 18 stehen, steigen in die Oberliga ab (zeitweise auch 1, 2, bzw. 4 Absteiger). Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher abgestiegen:

Rekordabsteiger sind somit Essen und Fürth, welche dreimal abgestiegen ist.
Amateurmeister
In den Saisons 9 bis 11 wurde in der Regionalliga zudem die Amateurmeisterschaft ausgespielt, da diese Liga gleichzeitig die höchste Spielklasse war in der Amateurteams spielen konnten. Der Titel wurde allerdings in den Saisons 12 und 13 Nicht-Amateurmannschaften verliehen, die "offizielle" Amateurmeisterschaft wurde zu dieser Zeit bereits in der Amateurliga ausgespielt. Der (Regionalliga-)Titel konnte von folgenden Mannschaften errungen werden:
