In der Saison 29 hatte er seinen Durchbruch mit 26 Jahren: 23 Erstligaeinsätze und gleich portugiesischer Meister. Seit Jahren war er die große Torwarthoffnung der Portuenser. Und jetzt das: verkauft an den FC Wacker Innsbruck - Alecsandro Sufrim (Stärke 9)! Damit hatten nicht viele gerechnet, doch Joernie wurde wieder einmal seinem Ruf gerecht, nicht so recht mit Torleuten zu können. Seit Joernie in Saison 11 das Ruder beim FC Porto übernommen hatte, gab es keinen Torwart, der sich auf längere Zeit seinen Platz zwischen den Pfosten sicher sein konnte. Liedson kam zwar auf immerhin 174 Ligaeinsätze, war aber de facto nur doch vier Saisons die Nummer 1. Antonio Paulo Miranda (162 Einsätze) war auch nur fünf Jahre seiner zehn Jahre beim FC Porto Stammkeeper und musste - wie nun sein Nachfolger Sufrim - in Saison 29 als Meister abtreten. Sufrim's hoffnungsvolle Karriere bei den Dragoes endete bereits nach 38 Einsätzen, doch es ist zu erwarten, dass er beim dreimaligen Alpenligameister Innsbruck seinen erfolgreichen Weg fortsetzen wird.
Allerdings spülte der Abgang von Sufrim nicht den Nachwuchskeeper Ali Matos (8) auf das Feld, sondern Joernie verpflichtete als Ersatz den österreichischen Nationaltorhüter Thorsten Feuerfeil (1 Länderspiel) vom FC Wacker Innsbruck. Feuerfeil hatte immerhin Stärke 10 erreicht, war aber auch bereits 31 Jahre alt. In Saison 27 hatte er sogar schon etwas Portugal-Erfahrung gesammelt, als er für ein Jahr leihweise beim Lokalrivalen Leixões SC unter Vertrag war. Joernie hatte Feuerfeil vor allem mit Blick auf die Europaliga verpflichtet, um in der starken Vorrundengruppe B noch ein wenig Stärkepunkte zuzulegen. Doch wusste Joernie, dass Feuerfeil bis dato noch kein einziges internationales Spiel absolviert hatte? Der Tausch mit Sufrim war also in dieser Hinsicht ziemlich gewagt. Erst die Zukunft wird zeigen, ob sich Joernie verspekuliert hat oder er den richtigen Riecher hatte, auf einen älteren, aber etwas stärkeren Tormann zu setzen.

In der ersten Runde des Taca de Portugal durfte der FC Porto im heimischen Stadion antreten. Als Gegner lief Ligakonkurrent FC Estrela Amadora auf, das sich u.a. mit dem brasilianischen Torwart Giovane Alexandre (30/9) vom CFC Genoa verstärkt hatte. Die Dragoes waren dennoch der klare Favorit und wurden dieser Erwartung auch gerecht, auch wenn die Begegnung - wie in den ersten Pokalrunden bei BMO leider üblich - ausgesprochen torreich verlief. Am Ende konnte sich Joernie aber über einen 6:5-Erfolg freuen, zu dem Tayfur Tandogan zwei Tore und Jão Luís Sampaio Silva, Adriano Edson, Rubens António und Jose Kenedy je einen Treffer beisteuerten. Die hochkarätige Offensive Porto's ging dagegen leer aus.
Im Achtelfinale musste der FC Porto dann aber wieder reisen. Und zwar in den Distrikt Santarem, zum CD Fátima. Der Zweitligist Fátima hatte in der ersten Runde den Gil Vicente FC ausgeschaltet, übrigens ebenfalls mit 6:5. Nun empfingen sie im bemerkenswert kleinen Estádio João Paulo II (1.500 Plätze) den dreimaligen Pokalsieger aus Porto. Mit Fátima hatten die Portuenser im Übrigen noch eine Rechnung offen. Vor vier Jahren waren die beiden Teams ebenfalls im Achtelfinale aufeinander getroffen und dabei hatte sich der Underdog aus Santarem durchgesetzt: mit 0:0 n.V. und 5:4 im Elftmeterschießen.

"Au Backe", entfuhr es Joernie, als er von der Auslosung der Vorrundengruppe B erfuhr. Sein FC Porto musste es mit zwei Hochkarätern - Sheffield Wednesday (Spielstärke 126) und dem 1. FC Köln (Spielstärke 116,5) - und zwei fast gleichstarken Teams - AZ Alkmaar (Spielstärke 105,5) und Zenit St. Petersburg (Spielstärke 102,5) - aufnehmen. Lediglich die Glasgow Rangers (Spielstärke 87,5) schienen nur Außenseiterchancen zu haben. Auch Köln's Manager inkoeln sprach von einer "Hammergruppe" und meinte damit natürlich auch den vorjährigen EL-Halbfinalisten Porto.
