Ein vierter Platz in der Liga, das frühe Aus in der 2. Runde des Europacups und dann auch noch die Finalniederlage im Taca de Portugal - eine Saison "zum Wegwerfen", wie Portos Manager Joernie formulierte. Sauer war nach dieser ersten titellosen Saison seit sechs Jahren aber nicht nur der Manager, sauer war vor allem auch der 76-jährige Präsident Pinto da Costa. Die Wertschätzung und große Anerkennung, die Joernie in den nun schon 24 Jahren seiner Tätigkeit bei den Dragoes erworben hatte, wandelte sich in der vergangenen Saison in Ernüchterung und Verdrossenheit. Es mehrten sich die Stimmen, dass das Ende der Ära Joernie in Porto unabänderlich näher rücke. Doch Pinto da Costa reichte Joernie, wenn auch mit reichlich verkniffenem Gesicht, noch einmal die Hand. Zu groß waren wohl die Verdienste des Managers. Aber er bekam den klaren Auftrag: es müsse sich etwas ändern.
