Seit langem strebte Portos Manager Joernie danach, auch im Trainerbereich mehr Kontinuität einkehren zu lassen. Vor diesem Hintergrund hätte er zu gerne mit Sergio Pinto weitergearbeitet, zumal die bisherige Zusammenarbeit mit dem 58-jährigen durchaus erfolgreich war, wie die letztjährige Primeira-Liga-Meisterschaft bewies. Doch Pinto, ein stolzer und selbstbewusster Mann, war gekränkt und nicht mehr bereit, einen neuen Kontrakt mit Joernie abzuschließen. Pinto hatte zur Mitte der Saison 35 vorgeschlagen, den Vertrag mit dem FC Porto vorzeitig zu verlängern. Damals wollte Joernie das Risiko nicht eingehen, da ihm das Erreichen des Saisonziels Meisterschaft keineswegs sicher erschien. Nun, nachdem die Meisterschaft errungen war, wollte Sergio Pinto nicht mehr. Er ließ sich stattdessen von beba, dem Manager von Associação Naval 1º de Maio, unter Vertrag nehmen. Naval war im Vorjahr "nur" Fünfter geworden und war schon lange heiß, nach zwei Vizemeisterschaften endlich den Titel nach Figeira da Foz zu holen. Mit Pinto schien beba den Trainer gefunden zu haben, der dieses Ziel erreichen konnte.
Joernie stand dagegen vor dem Problem, einen geeigneten Nachfolger für Sergio Pinto zu finden. Seine Wahl war etwas überraschend, denn der 61-jährige c hatte noch nie einen Titel gewonnen. Er war bis dato auch nur bei einem Verein tätig, dem FC Rio Ave. Den hatte er in der Saison 31 in die erste Liga geführt und im vergangenen Jahr den Aufsteiger - Rio Ave musste zwischenzeitlich wieder in die Liga de Honra zurück - auf einen ausgezeichneten 7. Platz geführt. Nur ganz knapp war der Klub aus Vila de Conde damit an der Qualifikation für den EC vorbeigeschrammt. Speziell gegen den FC Porto spielte der Underdog groß auf. Im Estadio do Dragao fügte er den Dragoes die einzige Heimniederlage bei (1:3). Und auch in Vila de Conde gab es ein hart umkämpftes Match, das der Favorit schließlich mit 6:4 gewinnen konnte. Diese Resultate trugen sicher mit dazu bei, dass der Respekt vor Miguel Ruiz Jiménez gewaltig anstieg. Trotzdem war es für Jiménez eine ganz neue und außergewöhnliche Herausforderung, einen portugiesischen Spitzenklub durch die Liga und die EL zu führen.
