Nach der wenig berauschenden Saison 37 war die Zeit für Trainer Miguel Ruiz Jiménez (63) abgelaufen. Joernie sah sich nach einem Nachfolger um und fand ihn in Frankreich. Dort hatte der 54-jährige Vitor Baia für Aufsehen gesorgt, als es ihm gelang, OGC Nice zur sechsten französischen Meisterschaft zu führen. Für Vitor Baia, der nach vielen Jahren in Frankreich gerne wieder in seine Heimat wollte, war dieser Erfolg eine ausgezeichnete Referenz, um beim FC Porto unterzukommen. Dort erwartete ihn zwar ein sehr anspruchsvolles Publikum, dem aber angesichts der vorangegangenen Saison inzwischen klar geworden war, dass die große Zeit der Dragoes erst einmal passé war.
Zusammen mit Vitor Baia musste Portos Manager eine Strategie entwickeln, wie der FC Porto wieder zu alter Stärke zurückfinden könnte. Aufgrund der soliden Finanzwirtschaft der letzten Jahre lagen einige Euros auf dem Festgeldkonto und Joernie war bereit, diese Kapital einzusetzen. Als eine mögliche Strategie wurde der Kauf von zwei nicht zu alten Spielern der Stärke 10 oder 11 in Betracht gezogen. Das hätte die Dragoes schlagartig wieder konkurrenzfähig gemacht, die Rücklagen aber vollständig aufgebraucht. Eine alternative Strategie wäre gewesen, in großem Umfang jüngere Perspektivspieler der Stärkeklasse 9-12 nach Porto zu holen, um das Nachwuchsteam zu veredeln in der Hoffnung, dereinst Diamanten im Kader zu finden. Wer Joernie kennt, ahnte wohl schon, dass er keine der beiden Extremvarianten bevorzugte. Zusammen mit Baia entschied er sich für eine Kompromissvariante: sowohl punktuelle Verstärkung des Profiteams als auch eine dosiert forcierte Nachwuchsarbeit.

Die neue Saison sollte die missratene vorangegangene vergessen lassen, doch die Schatten der Vergangenheit kamen bereits am ersten TAT zurück. Das Derby im Estadio do Bessa ging auch dieses Jahr sang- und klanglos mit 0:3 verloren. Nach zwei Eigentoren und einem Treffer von Vasco Barradas Novais war das Spiel bereits nach 23 Minuten entschieden. Noch schrecklicher verlief das Heimspiel gegen Mister Littis Uniao Leiria. Es war keinesfalls tröstlich, dass die Niederlage gegen Leiria mit 1:4 etwas weniger heftig ausfiel als im Vorjahr (1:6). Und als auch noch das zweite Auswärtsspiel in Madeira gegen CD Nacional mit 0:3 verloren ging (erneut waren bereits nach einer halben Stunde alle Tore gefallen) wurde der FC Porto tatsächlich auf den letzten Platz der Primeira Liga gestoßen.
