Dass der FC Porto sich in Europa inzwischen einen Namen gemacht hatte, zeigte sich daran, dass der portugiesische Meister in den Lostopf 1 der EL gesetzt wurde - neben dem aktuellen EL-Sieger 1. FC Kaiserslautern, dem ehemaligen EL-Gewinner Inter Mailand und dem ehemaligen EC-Sieger FC Vitoria Setubal. Trotzdem blieb den Dragoes ein schweres Los nicht erspart. In der Vorrundengruppe D wurde ihnen nämlich die nominell stärkste Mannschaft Europas zugelost, der englische Double-Sieger Sheffield Wednesday (Stärke 125). Ferner drei Teams, die in etwa die selbe Spielstärke aufwiesen, wie der FC Porto: der Alpenliga-Meister FC Vaduz (Stärke 112), der französische Meister AJ Auxerre (Stärke 112) und der deutsche Vizemeister Eintracht Trier (Stärke 109). Lediglich der Benelux-Meister FC Utrecht war mit "nur" 103 Stärkepunkten auf die Außenseiter-Rolle festgelegt.
Im ersten Spiel kam auch gleich der haushohe Favorit Sheffield Wednesday nach Porto. Die Engländer reisten mit dem neuen Manager Ray an, nachdem der langjährige Teamchef Sheffield's, Rauchi, unter ungeklärten Umständen entlassen worden war. Die Gäste um die beiden Megastars Oumar Perpetuini (AB/32/12,5) und Domenico Colucci (MF/34/12,5) und weiteren sechs Spielern der Stärke 11 sahen sich allerdings einem hoch motivierten Gegner gegenüber. Joernies Truppe war äußerst spielfreudig und zielstrebig und schickte die Engländer mit 4:1 (Torschützen: George Rickers (2), Tayfur Tandogan, Jaime Leandro sowie Oumar Perpetuini für Sheffield) nach Hause.
Auch die zweite Vorrundenbegegnung durfte der FC Porto im heimischen Estadio do Dragao austragen und musste sich dabei mit AJ Auxerre auseinandersetzen. Die Franzosen unter Manager Phil-07 hatten ihr erstes Spiel ebenfalls gewonnen (4:0 gegen FC Vaduz), blieben in Porto aber harmlos. Die Blau-Weißen gewannen ungefährdet mit 2:0 durch Tore von Rino Gianbruno und Neu-Nationalspieler Augusto Alexandre.
Das erste Auswärtsspiel trugen die Portuenser im kleinen Moselstadion, dem Heimstadion von Eintracht Trier. Die Pfälzer wurden seit 21 Jahren von Manager Lex betreut, der damit genau so lange im Amt war wie Porto's Joernie. Viermal schon standen sich in dieser Zeit die beiden Teams gegenüber und zweimal hatten dabei die Portugiesen gewonnen. Und auch diesmal nahmen die Iberer alle drei Punkte beim 4:2-Auswärtserfolg mit (Torschützen: Rino Gianbruno, Augusto Alexandre (2), Steve Duncan / Håkon Berget (2)).
Und die Siegesserie des FC Porto war noch nicht zu Ende. Mit Alpenliga-Meister FC Vaduz maß sich Porto erstmals mit einem liechtensteinischen Team. Der Schwung aus den ersten drei Vorrundenspielen war zwar nur noch in Ansätzen zu erkennen, aber es reichte gerade noch zu einem 1:0-Sieg durch einen Treffer von Jaime Leandro. Vaduz' Stürmerstar Aydin Volmer war ohne Wirkung geblieben.
Doch damit war der Faden gerissen. Im Stadion Galgenwaard zu Utrecht blieben die Portuenser gerade beim Außenseiter weit unter ihren Möglichkeiten und mussten eine deutliche 0:3-Niederlage hinnehmen (Tore durch Hervé Da Costa, Tommy Deans und Michael Mans). Der FC Porto blieb aber trotz dieses Rückschlags vorerst auf Platz 1 der Vorrundengruppe, während der FC Utrecht mit diesem Sieg seine letzten Chancen auf ein Weiterkommen wahrte.
Doch auch der Gruppenfavorit Sheffield Wednesday musste nach drei Niederlagen bereits um sein Überleben kämpfen. Im berühmten Hillsborough-Stadion rächten sich The Owls für die Hinspielniederlage mit einem saftigen 5:0 gegen den FC Porto. Für den englischen Double-Sieger, der damit wieder im Rennen war, schossen Juan Ramiro Copeiro, Michael Davies, Nick Mullin und Graham Duffy (2) die Tore.
