Die Ligue 1 war die höchste Spielklasse im französischen Fußball.
Sie wurde zur Saison 3 gegründet. Zunächst bestand die Liga aus 20 Mannschaften, seit der Saison 23 nur noch aus 18. Zur Saison 51 wurde sie geschlossen und die Vereine spielen nun in der Westeuropa-Liga
Jeder Verein der Liga tritt in Hin- und Rückspielen gegen jeden anderen Verein der Ligue 1 an. Die Mannschaft mit den meisten Punkten aus allen Spielen wird französischer Meister. Aus der Ligue 1 steigen die letzten vier Mannschaften in die Ligue 2 ab.

Aus der Ligue 1 steigen jede Saison die Mannschaften auf den Tabellenplätzen 16, 17 und 18 in die Ligue 2 ab. Bis zur Saison 22 hatte die Ligue 1 20 Teams, deshalb mussten die Mannschaften auf den Plätzen 17, 18, 19 und 20 absteigen.
Folgende Mannschaften sind bisher abgestiegen:
* Seit der Saison 44 gibt es keine zweite Liga mehr in Frankreich,
deshalb steigen die Teams nicht mehr automatisch ab.
