Nachdem El Lobo den Verein kurz nach Saisonbeginn übernommen hatte und zuvor heruntergewirtschaftet wurde und kein Zukunftspotential hatte, ging die Arbeit los, mit dem Ausblick 2-3 Saisons in der dritten spanischen Liga das Team umzukrempeln. Die Situation veränderte sich nach der Winterpause jedoch durch den Beschluss zur Abschaffung der Mixligen und somit der Tercera Division, wodurch ein Zwangsaufstieg erfolgte. Mérida war eines von 2 Profiteams in der Tercera Division.
