Dass der FC Porto sich in Europa inzwischen einen Namen gemacht hatte, zeigte sich daran, dass der portugiesische Meister in den Lostopf 1 der EL gesetzt wurde - neben dem aktuellen EL-Sieger 1. FC Kaiserslautern, dem ehemaligen EL-Gewinner Inter Mailand und dem ehemaligen EC-Sieger FC Vitoria Setubal. Trotzdem blieb den Dragoes ein schweres Los nicht erspart. In der Vorrundengruppe D wurde ihnen nämlich die nominell stärkste Mannschaft Europas zugelost, der englische Double-Sieger Sheffield Wednesday (Stärke 125). Ferner drei Teams, die in etwa die selbe Spielstärke aufwiesen, wie der FC Porto: der Alpenliga-Meister FC Vaduz (Stärke 112), der französische Meister AJ Auxerre (Stärke 112) und der deutsche Vizemeister Eintracht Trier (Stärke 109). Lediglich der Benelux-Meister FC Utrecht war mit "nur" 103 Stärkepunkten auf die Außenseiter-Rolle festgelegt.
Im ersten Spiel kam auch gleich der haushohe Favorit Sheffield Wednesday nach Porto. Die Engländer reisten mit dem neuen Manager Ray an, nachdem der langjährige Teamchef Sheffield's, Rauchi, unter ungeklärten Umständen entlassen worden war. Die Gäste um die beiden Megastars Oumar Perpetuini (AB/32/12,5) und Domenico Colucci (MF/34/12,5) und weiteren sechs Spielern der Stärke 11 sahen sich allerdings einem hoch motivierten Gegner gegenüber. Joernies Truppe war äußerst spielfreudig und zielstrebig und schickte die Engländer mit 4:1 (Torschützen: George Rickers (2), Tayfur Tandogan, Jaime Leandro sowie Oumar Perpetuini für Sheffield) nach Hause.
Auch die zweite Vorrundenbegegnung durfte der FC Porto im heimischen Estadio do Dragao austragen und musste sich dabei mit AJ Auxerre auseinandersetzen. Die Franzosen unter Manager Phil-07 hatten ihr erstes Spiel ebenfalls gewonnen (4:0 gegen FC Vaduz), blieben in Porto aber harmlos. Die Blau-Weißen gewannen ungefährdet mit 2:0 durch Tore von Rino Gianbruno und Neu-Nationalspieler Augusto Alexandre.
