Transfers
Angesichts des Rekordverlustes, den der FC Porto in der Meistersaison 32 eingefahren hatte, musste Joernie am Transfermarkt Enthaltsamkeit üben. Kein einziger Spieler konnte zum Saisonbeginn an den Rio Douro geholt werden.
Statt dessen gab es einen unerwarteten und schmerzlichen Abgang: Trainer Marco Antwerpen, seit der Saison 29 beim FC Porto unter Vertrag, verließ die Dragoes auf eigenen Wunsch in Richtung Schweiz. Er unterschrieb beim FC Basel, dessen Manager Sava noch gute Kontakte nach Portugal hatte. Die Ära Antwerpen war die wohl erfolgreichste Zeit des FC Porto. In den vier Saison mit dem deutschen Trainer gewannen die Blau-Weißen in jedem Jahr einen Titel: dreimal die portugiesische Meisterschaft und einmal den Taca de Portugal. Joernie hätte Marco Antwerpen liebend gerne noch ein weiteres Jahr beschäftigt, doch der Deutsche, der schon einmal in der Schweiz gearbeitet hatte (Saisons 24 - 25 beim FC Wil), ließ sich nicht mehr umstimmen.
Joernie konnte jedoch schon bald einen namhaften Nachfolger präsentieren: den 59-jährigen Portugiesen Dani. Dani hatte zuletzt Associação Naval 1º de Maio zum größten Vereinserfolg verholfen, der Vizemeisterschaft hinter dem FC Porto. Und Dani war es auch, der es in den letzten fünf Saison geschafft hatte, den FC Porto einmal die Meisterschaft zu entreißen: in der Saison 30 mit dem FC Vitoria Setubal. Allerdings war Dani bislang immer nur ein Jahr bei einem Verein tätig, dann zog es ihn stets weiter. Joernie hat dagegen gerne Trainer, mit denen er etwas längerfristig zusammenarbeiten kann.
Teamstärke
Als Portugiesischer Meister musste der FC Porto am Ende der Saison 32 mit nur zwei Aufwertungen zufrieden sein: das bulgarische Abwehrtalent Russi Etcheverry verbesserte sich auf Stärke 9 und der dritte Torwart, Carlos Dantas, steigerte sich auf Stärke 8. Waren die Aufwertungen schon nicht gerade berauschend, so waren die Altersabwertungen niederschmetternd: Kapitän Jaime Leandro wurde mit 34 Jahren von 11 auf 10 abgewertet und Angreifer Steve Duncan mit 33 Jahren von 9 auf 8. Die Teamstärke verminderte sich so zum vierten Mal in Folge auf nun 109,5 (-1). Diese anhaltend negative Entwicklung wirkte sich auch national aus. Der FC Porto war fortan nicht mehr die nominelle Nummer zwei hinter dem FC Vitoria Setubal (aktuell Stärke 116,0). Uniao Leiria hatte eine großen Sprung nach vorne gemacht und den FC Porto mit einer Teamstärke von 110,0 knapp überrundet. Insgesamt gab es weiterhin sechs Mannschaften mit einer Teamstärke > 100: FC Vitoria Setubal, Uniao Leiria, FC Porto, Associação Naval 1º de Maio, Maritimo Funchal und Estrela Amadora. Den größten Stärkegewinn verzeichnete aber der SC Olhanense, der sich um 5,5 Punkte verbessern konnte (auf 86,0). Den größten Stärkeverlust musste der SC Beira-Mar hinnehmen: -7,5 auf 87,5. Dramatisch auch der Stärkeverlust des Rekordpokalsiegers und Ex-Meisters Benfica Lissabon (-7,5 auf 86,5).

Zum fünften Mal hintereinander war der FC Porto in der BMO-Königsklasse startberechtigt. Mit 253 Punkten aus der europäischen 3-Jahres-Wertung wurden die Portugiesen sogar dem Lostopf 2 zugeordnet. Doch das verhinderte nicht, dass Joernies Mannschaft wieder einmal einer außerordentlich starken Vorrundengruppe zugelost wurde. Mit seiner Stärke von 109,5 war der FC Porto sogar das zweitschwächste Team in der Gruppe. Nur der Osteuropa-Vizemeister Slavia Sofia war mit 102,5 Punkten nominell schwächer als die Dragoes. Der Alpenliga-Meister AC Bellinzona war mit einer Stärke von 110,5 wenigstens noch mit den Portugiesen vergleichbar. Der deutsche Meister 1. FC Köln (117,5 Punkte), der spanische Meister Espanyol Barcelona (117,5) und das weltweit stärkste Team überhaupt, der englische Meister Sheffield Wednesday (124,5 Punkte) schienen geradezu übermachtig zu sein.
