"Leider ist es uns nicht gelungen, Alain Roche als Trainer in Salzburg zu halten. Er hat ein Angebot des OGC Nice angenommen und wird in seine Heimat zurückkehren". Diese betrübliche Nachricht verkündete Austrias Manager Joernie bei seiner ersten Pressekonferenz zur neuen Saison. Dass Roche nach Nizza ging, konnte ihm kaum jemand verübeln. Der französische Rekordmeister - im vergangenen Jahr hatte Nice sogar zum achten Mal hintereinander den Titel gewonnen! - verfügte über ein bärenstarkes Team und bot Roche die Chance, die Champions League zu rocken. "Ich freue mich aber, dass ich Ihnen bereits heute einen Nachfolger präsentieren kann: Adnan Kevric!" Adnan wer, fragten sich die Journalisten. Der 52-jährige Deutsch-Bosnier war seit Jahren nicht mehr im Geschäft, nachdem er mit Arminia Bielefeld aus der Bundesliga abgestiegen und es ihm dreimal nicht gelungen war, wieder aufzusteigen. Große Erstliga-Erfahrung hatte Adnan Kevric auch ansonsten nicht, denn auch mit dem OSC Lille war er nach einem Jahr bereits wieder abgestiegen. "Adnan ist jung und erfolgshungrig. Wir sind überzeugt, dass er dem Team neue Impulse geben kann", erklärte Joernie trotzig. In der Tat schien das Alter eine große Rolle bei der Auswahl gespielt zu haben. Auf dem leergefegten Trainermarkt tummelten sich fast nur noch Fußballlehrer im Seniorenalter. Der Saisonverlauf sollte zeigen, ob sich die Entscheidung Joernies, statt auf Erfahrung und Erfolge nur auf das Alter zu setzen, bewähren würde.

Erster Gegner der Austrianer im Alpenliga-Pokal war der Schweizer Zweitligist FC Schaffhausen. Der letztjährige Tabellenletzte der Alpen-Bundesliga durfte nur aufgrund einer Entscheidung am grünen Tisch weiter in der zweithöchsten Alpenligaklasse mitkicken. Kurz vor dem Aufeinandertreffen im Schaffhauser Stadion Breite heuerte bei den Nordschweizern JewelZ als neuer Manager an. Auffälligster Spieler der Hausherrn war der 25-jährige Sambier Hamad Kampamba (8), den sich Joernie auch in seinem Team hätte gut vorstellen können. Salzburg ging natürlich als Favorit in das Spiel, hatte jedoch mit der für die erste Pokalrunde üblichen harten Gegenwehr zu kämpfen. Allerdings gelang es den Violetten immerhin, innerhalb der regulären Spielzeit den Sieg mit 6:5 sicherzustellen, so dass ein Tor mit in die nächste Runde genommen werden konnte. Für die Austria trafen Armin Laganda (2), Aaron Roscher (2), Winfried Molter und Abella Fucile.
Die Vorrunde führte zu einigen Favoritenstürzen: AC Bellinzona unterlag mit 5:6 beim Aufsteiger FC St. Gallen, SK Vorwärts Steyr schied im Elfmeterschießen gegen den SC Wiener Neustadt aus, der FC Zürich verlor mit 4:6 beim SK Rapid Wien und Sturm Graz konnte den Heimvorteil gegen den FC Lugano nicht nutzen (6:6 n.V., 4:5 i.E.).

Nach einem Jahr Pause durfte der SV Austria Salzburg in Saison 45 wieder im internationalen Fußballgeschäft mitmischen. Als letztjähriger Tabellendritter der Alpen-Superliga waren die Salzburger allerdings nur für die Europa League qualifiziert. In ihrer Vorrundengruppe hatten sie es mit einem klaren Favoriten, vier in etwa gleich starken Konkurrenten und einem Außenseiter zu tun.
