Zum Saisonauftakt nach Zürich: einen besseren Ort konnte es für den SV Austria Salzburg dafür nicht geben. Zuletzt hatten die Violetten in Saison 48 im Letzigrund verloren und auch dieses Jahr nahmen die Gäste alle drei Punkte mit. Allerdings dauerte es bis zur 67. Minute, bis Daniel Braun die Austria auf die Siegesstraße brachte. Am Schluss stand ein in der Höhe etwas zu hoch ausgefallener 5:2-Sieg. Weniger erfreuliche Erinnerungen hatten die Salzburger dagegen an das Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz. Dort gab es für die Mozartstädter bis dato ausschließlich Niederlagen. Diesmal ergatterten sie beim 0:0 immerhin einen Punkt. Zusammen mit dem 1:0-Heimsieg gegen Bellizona also ein passabler Saisonstart.
Mit den 7 Punkten setzte sich der SV Austria Salzburg gleich mal richtig weit oben in der Tabelle fest: Platz 2, punktgleich mit dem FC Basel, der auswärts 4:3 beim SSC Napoli und zu Hause im Derby gegen den FC Zürich siegte. Als einzige Mannschaft ungeschlagen kam der SC Viktoria Wien mit seinem neuen Manager GasCan durch den Spieltag, was natürlich Platz 1 bedeutete. Titelverteidiger FC Sion saß den drei führenden Teams aber bereits als Vierter im Nacken. Der Favorit hatte beim 1:4 in Altach Federn lassen müssen. 6 Punkten hatten aber auch noch Inter Mailand, Brescia Calcio und der SC Wiener Neustadt. Ganz ohne Punkte blieben Austria Wien, das drei knappe Niederlagen hinnehmen musste, und der FC Zürich.
Die Torschützenwertung führten des Österreicher Toni Halla (25/9) vom SV Ried und der Italiener Francesco Barletta (26/10) von Inter Mailand mit je 4 Toren an. Bester Salzburger Torschütze war Wilhelm Beck (2). Bei der Vorlagengeberwertung war der 31-jährige Deutsche Christopher Jung im Dienste des FC Basel an der Spitze (4 Vorlagen). Bester Salzburger war auch hier Wilhelm Beck mit 2 Torvorlagen.

Den SC Wiener Neustadt als Gegner in der Vorrunde zu erhalten, ist schon ein schlechtes Los. Dann auch noch auswärts antreten zu müssen, ist ganz miserabel. So verwunderte es nicht, dass der Titelverteidiger aus Salzburg schon bei der ersten Hürde strauchelte. Im vierten Pokalspiel gegen die Niederösterreicher gab es die dritte Pleite. Joernie nahm es dennoch scheinbar gelassen: "Damit hat sich die schreckliche Dreifachbelastung aus Liga, CL und Pokal schon mal erledigt."
