Die Weltmeisterschaft fand in der Saison 68 zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz statt. Qualifiziert hatte sich die Schweiz als Viertelfinalist der Euro '67. Der größte Erfolg der Schweizer war zuvor der Gewinn der WM in der Saison 60, bei der letzten WM waren die Eidgenossen allerdings nicht mit dabei.
Gespielt wurde in acht Vierergruppen. Jedes Team bekam 6 Tore auf das Torkonto, eine Teilung in Heim- und Auswärtstorkonto gab es nicht. Die jeweils Erst- und Zweitplatzierten zogen ins Achtelfinale ein. Die Erstplatzierten bekamen hierbei 4 Tore auf ihr Torkonto gutgeschrieben, die Zweitplatzierten 3 Tore. Im Achtelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: 1-1 gegen 2-2, 1-2 gegen 2-1, 3-1 gegen 4-2, 3-2 gegen 4-1, 5-1 gegen 6-2, 5-2 gegen 6-1, 7-1 gegen 8-2, 7-2 gegen 8-1. Für das Viertelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger AF1 gegen Sieger AF3, Sieger AF2 gegen Sieger AF4, Sieger AF5 gegen Sieger AF7, Sieger AF6 gegen Sieger AF8. Das Überstehen des Viertelfinales brachte erneut eine Gutschrift von 3 Toren auf die Torkonten der verbleibenden Teilnehmer. Für das Halbfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger VF1 gegen Sieger VF3, Sieger VF2 gegen Sieger VF4. Das Finale bestritten die beiden Sieger des Halbfinales, die Verlierer trugen das Spiel um den 3. Platz aus.
Titelverteidiger war der amtierende Europameister aus Schottland. Die Schotten waren als Welt- und Europameister natürlich auch einer der Topfavoriten für dieses Turnier, daneben aber auch die Teams aus Australien, Brasilien und der Türkei, die in der Weltrangliste unmittelbar nach Schottland rangierten. Dass auch die deutsche Nationalmannschaft ein Wörtchen bei der Titelvergabe mitreden wollte, versteht sich angesichts der (mengenmäßigen) Dominanz deutscher Spieler im BMO-Universum von selbst.
Geleitet wurde der Wettbewerb erneut vom WM-Edition-Leiter Ralle.
