Maccabi Haifa ist ein 1913 gegründeter israelischer Sportverein aus Haifa.

Haifa ist mit rd. 280.000 Einwohnern die drittgrößte Stadt Israels (nach Jerusalem und Tel Aviv). Die Siedlung, die an den Hängen des Berges Karmel erbaut wurde, hat eine Geschichte von mehr als 3.000 Jahren. Die früheste bekannte Siedlung in der Nähe war Tell Abu Hawam, eine kleine Hafenstadt, die in der Spätbronzezeit (14. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) gegründet wurde. Im 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. war Haifa als Zentrum der Farbstoffherstellung bekannt. Im Laufe der Jahrtausende hat Haifa mehrfach den Besitzer gewechselt: Es wurde von den Kanaanitern, Israeliten, Phöniziern, Assyrern, Babyloniern, Persern, Hasmonen, Römern, Byzantinern, Arabern, Kreuzfahrern, Osmanen und Briten erobert und regiert. Die heutige Großstadt an der Mittelmeerküste existiert seit Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts und war bis Mitte der 1940er Jahre eine überwiegend arabische Stadt. Während der Schlacht von Haifa im Palästinakrieg 1948 floh der größte Teil der überwiegend arabischen Bevölkerung der Stadt oder wurde ausgewiesen. Heute machen israelische Juden etwa 82% der Bevölkerung aus, fast 14% sind Christen (überwiegend arabische Christen), etwa 4% sind Muslime. Im Großraum Haifa leben etwa 600.000 Menschen. Haifa wurde durch das fortgesetzte Wachstum zur flächenmäßig größten israelischen Stadt. Durch die Topographie und die Höhenunterschiede haben sich drei Zentren entwickelt: Das erste Zentrum bildet die Unterstadt unmittelbar am Hafen. Hier, am Fuß des Berges, liegen die meisten Wohnungen ärmerer arabischstämmiger jüdischer und arabische Israelis. Das zweite Zentrum ist die Terrasse von Hadar ha-Karmel, es ist das Haupteinkaufs- und Vergnügungszentrum mit Verwaltungsgebäuden und Ämtern. Das dritte Zentrum liegt auf dem Kamm des Karmel mit Kulturinstitutionen wie Theater und Konzerthallen, außerdem Hotels, Cafés und gehobenen Geschäfte. Hier liegen auch die Universitäten, die 1963 neu gegründete Universität Haifa und der neue Campus des bereits seit 1912 bestehenden Technions (der Technischen Universität Israels, die ihren Betrieb aber erst 1924 aufnahm), inmitten bewaldeter Erholungsgebiete.
