Saisonverlauf
Pokal
In dieser Saison begann der Pokalwettbewerb mit einer kleinen Besonderheit. CS Marítimo Funchal bekam in der ersten Runde das Heimrecht zugelost. Der Gegner war damit automatisch ein Erstligist, aber zum Glück für Marítimo sollte es eine machbare Aufgabe werden. Der FC Marco kam aus dem Norden Portugals auf die Blumeninsel geflogen und brachte natürlich auch Ambitionen auf den Einzug in die zweite Runde mit. Marítimo hingegen konnte nicht mit der besten Elf antreten. In der Abwehr fehlte der neue Kapitän David Delap, im Sturm Starspieler Joe Warboys. Doch motiviert waren die Spieler von Trainer Robin Dutt trotzdem. Für letzteren war es das erste offizielle Spiel und alle waren gespannt, wie der neue Trainer die Mannschaft einstellen würde. Man begann mit einem defensiven 5-3-2-System, wobei Dutt zu großen Teilen auf die Stammelf der vergangenen Saison setzte. Achileas Kalabakas gab als einziger Neuzugang sein Debüt in der Startelf. Das Spiel - selbstverständlich ausverkauft - war ein echter Kracher. Marítimo konnte sich zwar wieder leichte Vorteile erspielen, doch der FC Marco hielt mit extrem gefährlichen Konter dagegen. Zur Halbzeit stand es 2:2. Was dann auch immer in der Kabine passiert sein mag, die Jungs von Marítimo legten in der zweiten Hälfte noch einen drauf. kaum 5 Minuten waren in Halbzeit 2 gespielt, da hatten Samu-Petteri Viljanen und der Debütant Achileas Kalabakas Funchal mit 4:2 in Führung gebracht. Als dann nach einer Ecke Trindade Guedes noch das 5:2 per Kopfball besorgt hatte, schien alles klar. Doch der FC Marco gab nicht auf und kam durch Tore von Mehmet Ayaz und Ernst Mayer auf 5:4 heran. Der erfahrene Mirko Jager war es dann, der per Elfmeter das vorentscheidende 6:4 in der 82. Minute schoss. Damit stand Marítimo in Runde zwei und das Debüt von Robin Dutt war geglückt.
Im Achtelfinale gab es ein weiteres Heimspiel für CS Marítimo Funchal. Doch der Gegner hatte es in sich. Diesmal schickte sich Uniao Leiria mit Manager T-Jay an, Marítimo zu besiegen. Robin Dutt ließ keinen Zweifel an den Ambitionen von Funchal und schickte die beste Elf auf den Platz. Leiria hingegen hatte mit einigen Verletzungssorgen zu kämpfen. Beide Profitorhüter hatten sich verletzt und so musste ein Amateurkeeper ran. Und dies sollte Folgen haben. Der zunächst ausgeglichenen Partie gab Marcel Jaime in der 42. Minute - also kurz vor der Halbzeitpause - eine Wende: 0:1 aus Sicht von CS Marítimo Funchal hieß es da. Etwas geknickt ging es in die Kabine, doch wieder traf Robin Dutt die richtigen Worte und seine Mannen waren nach der Halbzeitpause sofort konzentriert und aggressiv in den Zweikämpfen. Der wieder genesene Kapitän David Delap war es dann, der nach einer Ecke den Ball zum 1:1 ins Tor stocherte. Unglücksfigur war dabei der Torhüter von Leiria, der den Eckball zunächst unterlaufen war. Alles rechnete mit einer Verlängerung, als in der 88. Minute Cristiano Moraes zu seinem Meisterstück ansetzte: mit einem Zuckerpass in die Schnittstelle der Viererkette schickte er Joe Warboys auf den Weg. Und dieser umkurvte gekonnt den völlig überfordert wirkenden Torhüter und schob dann lässig zum 2:1 ein. Von diesem Schock erholte sich Leiria nicht mehr und so hieß der Sieger nach 90 Minuten CS Marítimo Funchal.
Viertelfinale: drittes Spiel, drittes Mal Heimrecht. Diesmal wollte Leixoes SC sein Glück auf der Insel versuchen. Stärkemäßig galt das Team von Manager Marquinho als klarer Favorit - doch der Pokal hat bekanntlich seine eigenen Gesetze. Trainer Robin Dutt spielte dieses Mal mit einem 4-3-3-System und verzichtete auf Toptorjäger Joe Warboys und Neuzugang Marco Fangueiro. Doch auch so machte Marítimo einen guten Eindruck und hatte den Gegner von der ersten Minute im Griff. Als das Jahrhundertalent Maximo da Silva Cardoso dann sah, wie sich Routinier Samu-Petteri Viljanen von seinem Gegenspieler löste und einen punktgenauen Pass spielte, war die Führung des Favoriten perfekt. 1:0 stand es nach 21 Minuten. Nun hätte man erwartet, das Leixoes in die Offensive ging, doch bis zur Halbzeitpause war davon nichts zu sehen. Marítimo durfte in Ruhe weiter kombinieren - verpasste es aber, frühzeitig die Entscheidung herbeizuführen. Nach der Pause versuchten es die Gäste dann offensiver. Doch Erfolg hatte die Taktik nicht - im Gegenteil. Nch einen schönen Doppelpass mit Jonathan O'Kane stand Afonso Oeiras plötzlich frei vor dem Tor der Gäste und ließ sich die Gelegenheit nicht nehmen. Die darauffolgenden 24 Minuten waren eher ein Schau- und Auslaufen für Marítimo als das man von einem Aufbäumen der Gäste hätte reden können. Mit 2:0 ging es so in das Halbfinale.
Dort gab es - zum ersten Mal in dieser Saison - kein Heimrecht für CS Marítimo Funchal. Man musste ins Estádio Municipal de Aveiro "Mario Duarte", dem Heimstadion vom SC Beira-Mar.
