Weil das Saisonziel in Saison 16 verfehlt wurde, musste Trainer Nuno Nunes gehen. Als sein Nachfolger wurde der 45-jährige Italiener Nicola Caccia verpflichtet. Verstärkungen für das Profiteam gab es keine, auch Abgänge waren keine zu verzeichnen.
SuperLiga
Obwohl Caccia auf eine eingespielte Mannschaft zurückgreifen konnte, die eine phantastische Rückrunde in Saison 16 gespielt hatte, legte der FC Porto erneut einen miserablen Saisonstart hin. Schon nach sieben Spieltagen und Niederlagen gegen den Meister FC Vitoria Setubal, den Aufsteiger FC Estrela Amadora sowie Uniao Leiria, Academica Coimbra und FC Pacos de Ferreira war klar, dass die Dragoes erneut nicht um die Meisterschaft mitspielen würden. Im Gegensatz zum Vorjahr wurde die Krise während der gesamten Saison nicht richtig überwunden. Ergebnis war die bis dato schlechteste Saison des FC Porto in der SuperLiga: Platz 5 mit nur 62 Punkten, 18 Punkte (!!) hinter dem neuen Meister Maritimo Funchal.
Das war die Stammformation des FC Porto in Saison 17: Stefan Wessels (19) - Samuel Lochmatter (31), Vintra (28), Giovanni Pasquale (22) - Thomas Butler (31), Jimmy Makasa (27), Hugo Viana (19) - Luis Filipe Madeira Frechaut Barreto (34), Andrade (27), Marco Betis (25), Moussa N'Diaye (21).
Die besten Torschützen: Luis Filipe Madeira Frechaut Barreto mit 17 Treffern, Thomas Butler mit 13 und Moussa N'Diaye mit 12 Toren.
Die besten Vorlagengeber: Thomas Butler mit 15 Torvorlagen, gefolgt von Jimmy Makasa mit 9 und Vintra mit 6 Vorlagen.
Taca de Portugal
Im Taca de Portugal scheiterte der FC Porto wie im Vorjahr am Cupverteidiger FC Vitoria Setubal, doch diesmal war bereits im Halbfinale die Endstation erreicht (5:6 n.V.). Zuvor hatten sich die Dragoes gegen den SC Braga (6:5), in Lissabon gegen Benfica (1:1 n.V., 3:4 i.E.) und gegen Academica Coimbra (1:0) durchgesetzt. Setubal gewann anschließend auch das Finale gegen Meister Maritimo Funchal mit 2:0.
Europa-Cup
Im EC war für den FC Porto wieder einmal nach der 2. Runde Schluss. Konnte zunächst Borussia Mönchengladbach in zwei torreichen Begegnungen (5:5 und 6:5) ausgeschaltet werden, war der Tabellendritte der Benelux Ehrendivision, Ajax Amsterdam nicht zu überwinden. Nach dem 2:0-Heimsieg folgte eine 0:3-Niederlage in Amsterdam. Doch die Holländer kamen anschließend auch nicht sehr viel weiter. Bereits im Achtelfinale schieden sie gegen den 1. FC Köln aus.
Vereinswertung
Die enttäuschende Saison spiegelte sich natürlich auch in der nationalen Vereinswertung wieder. Mit 54 Punkten erreichte der FC Porto nur den 4. Platz. Sieger war hier erneut der FC Vitoria Setubal mit 93 Punkten.
International fiel der FC Porto damit auf den 41. Platz zurück (zusammen mit ZSKA Moskau). Hinter den Portuensern lagen z.B. KRC Genk, FSV Mainz 05, AC Bellinzona und Manchester United. Die drei besten europäischen Klubs in diesem Jahr waren Inter Mailand (125 Punkte), Leeds United (119 Punkte) und Real Madrid (105 Punkte).
