Der Linfield Football Club ist ein 1886 gegründeter nordirischer Fußballverein aus der Hauptstadt Belfast. Belfast (irisch Béal Feirste ist die Hauptstadt von Nordirland im Vereinigten Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland und die zweitgrößte Stadt der irischen Insel nach Dublin. Belfast hat etwa 336.000 Einwohner und liegt an der Mündung des Flusses Lagan in der Bucht von Belfast (englisch Belfast Lough). Die Stadt besitzt den Status einer City und bildet einen der elf nordirischen Verwaltungsbezirke. Im Dublin-Belfast corridor entlang der Autobahn wohnen drei der sechs Millionen Iren. Belfast ist Sitz eines katholischen (Bistum Down und Connor) und eines anglikanischen Bischofs (Bistum Down und Dromore), Universitätsstadt und besitzt einen Seehafen. Die Stadt ist außerdem Sitz der Regierung und des Parlaments von Nordirland. Innerstädtische Gebiete Belfasts gehörten vor allem in den 1970er Jahren zu den Schauplätzen des Nordirlandkonflikts.

Linfield FC war 1890 erster Meister Gesamtirlands und nimmt seitdem ununterbrochen am Spielbetrieb der höchsten Spielklasse der zuerst gesamtirischen, seit 1921/22 aber rein nordirischen Irish League teil. Mit mehr als 200 Titeln - darunter alleine 48 Meistertiteln - gilt Linfield FC als erfolgreichste Mannschaft der Welt.

Der Club wurde im März 1886 von Arbeitern der Linfield Spinning Mill, einer Wollspinnerei, als Linfield Athletic Club gegründet. Schon bei der Gründung war der Club protestantisch geprägt und blieb es seitdem.

In den ersten Jahren spielte der Verein auf einer Wiese hinter der Fabrik. Diese (wie auch der spätere Ausweichplatz) musste jedoch schon bald als Spielstätte aufgegeben werden, so dass Linfield um die Jahrhundertwende heimatlos wurde und alle Spiele auf fremdem Platz bestritt und erst 1905 seine heutige Heimstätte, Windsor Park, beziehen konnte. Trotzdem war der Verein schon in den ersten Jahren nach seiner Gründung äußerst erfolgreich, die ersten drei Meisterschaften Irlands konnten errungen werden, mit lediglich zwei verlorenen Spielen in drei Jahren. Der Verein galt schon bald als erfolgreichster Klub der irischen Insel.

In der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, auch schon vor der Unabhängigkeit der Republik Irland im Jahre 1921, prägte die Rivalität zwischen Linfield und dem ebenfalls protestantisch geprägten Glentoran FC sowie dem großen katholischen Klub Belfast Celtic die Meisterschaften. Mit der Trennung der beiden irischen Verbände gelang es Linfield schließlich auch, alle sieben in Nordirland ausgetragenen Wettbewerbe, an denen sie teilnehmen konnten, zu gewinnen.

Insbesondere die Duelle mit Belfast Celtic, dessen Heimstadion sich in unmittelbarer Nähe des Windsor Park, befand, prägten fortan die nordirische Meisterschaft. Nachdem Celtic in den 1940-er Jahren meist überlegen war, kam es beim Linfielder Heimspiel gegen Celtic in der Saison 1948/49 zu einem Eklat, der zur Auflösung des Belfast Celtic FC führte. Bei einem ansonsten unauffälligen Unentschieden (1:1) verletzte ein Abwehrspieler von Celtic den Linfield-Spieler Bob Bryson schwer. Nach Abpfiff stürmten die Anhänger von Linfield das Spielfeld und verprügelten daraufhin die Celtic-Spieler.

Der resultierende Rückzug von Belfast Celtic aus der nordirischen Liga wird teilweise für den folgenden Qualitätsverlust der Liga verantwortlich gemacht.

Nach dem Ausscheiden von Belfast Celtic beherrschte Linfield die Nordirische Liga nach Belieben, wobei dabei das sogenannte "Team of the Century" besonders hervorzuheben ist, das 1961/62 den Erfolg von 1921 mit Siegen in allen sieben möglichen Bewerben wiederholen konnte

In den 1980-er Jahren wurden Fanausschreitungen jedoch zu einem derart großen Problem, dass die UEFA Linfield im Jahre 1988 sogar dazu verurteilte, alle Europacup-Heimspiele für zwei Jahre auf neutralem Grund (Wales) auszutragen.

Die Dominanz Linfields sank zwar nach 1990 spürbar, die Blues blieben jedoch weiter die führende Mannschaft in Nordirland. In der Saison 2006/07 gelang es Linfield als erstem Team seit mehr als 70 Jahren, das Double Meisterschaft und Pokalsieg zu verteidigen.
