Die EM der Saison 59 wurde in Italien ausgespielt. Dort hatte zuletzt die Europameisterschaft Saison 10 stattgefunden. Die Nationalmannschaft Italiens war bei der letzten Europameisterschaft in Wales und Irland bereits in der Vorrunde ausgeschieden. Bei der WM'56 in Paraguay war Italien im Achtelfinale an der Türkei gescheitert. Europameister war Italien bisher zweimal: EM'07 und EM'20. Hinzu kommt ein WM-Titel: Weltmeisterschaft Saison 33.

Gespielt wurde in acht Vierergruppen. Jedes Team bekam 6 Tore auf das Torkonto, eine Teilung in Heim- und Auswärtstorkonto gab es nicht. Die jeweils Erst- und Zweitplatzierten zogen ins Achtelfinale ein. Die Erstplatzierten bekamen hierbei 4 Tore auf ihr Torkonto gutgeschrieben, die Zweitplatzierten 3 Tore. Im Achtelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: 1-1 gegen 2-2, 1-2 gegen 2-1, 3-1 gegen 4-2, 3-2 gegen 4-1, 5-1 gegen 6-2, 5-2 gegen 6-1, 7-1 gegen 8-2, 7-2 gegen 8-1. Für das Viertelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger AF1 gegen Sieger AF3, Sieger AF2 gegen Sieger AF4, Sieger AF5 gegen Sieger AF7, Sieger AF6 gegen Sieger AF8. Das Überstehen des Viertelfinales brachte erneut eine Gutschrift von 4 Toren auf die Torkonten der verbleibenden Teilnehmer. Für das Halbfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger VF1 gegen Sieger VF3, Sieger VF2 gegen Sieger VF4. Das Finale bestritten die beiden Sieger des Halbfinales, die Verlierer trugen das Spiel um den 3. Platz aus.

Titelverteidiger des Daniel-Schmitz-Pokals war das Team aus Deutschland. Einer der Mitfavoriten war natürlich auch Weltmeister Zypern.

Betreut wurde der Wettbewerb vom WM-Edition-Leiter Ralle.
