Die EM der Saison 67 wurde gemeinsam in Schottland und Wales ausgespielt. Schottland war zuvor bereits Gastgeber der Euro '18 und Co-Gastgeber der Euro '46. Wales hatte vor zehn Jahren bereits die EM '57 zusammen mit Irland durchgeführt. Schottland war bei der letzten Europameisterschaft immerhin Dritter geworden, Wales hatte es bis in das Achtelfinale geschafft. Schottland ging als amtierender Weltmeister in das Turnier und hatte auch bereits bei WM '43 den Titel gewonnen. Bei einer Europameisterschaft warteten die Schotten aber noch auf den ersten Titel. Dreimal standen sie schon im Finale und verloren jeweils (EM '18, EM '53 und EM '55. Für Wales war das Achtelfinale der Euro '65 der bislang größte Erfolg.

Gespielt wurde in acht Vierergruppen. Jedes Team bekam 6 Tore auf das Torkonto, eine Teilung in Heim- und Auswärtstorkonto gab es nicht. Die jeweils Erst- und Zweitplatzierten zogen ins Achtelfinale ein. Die Erstplatzierten bekamen hierbei 4 Tore auf ihr Torkonto gutgeschrieben, die Zweitplatzierten 3 Tore. Im Achtelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: 1-1 gegen 2-2, 1-2 gegen 2-1, 3-1 gegen 4-2, 3-2 gegen 4-1, 5-1 gegen 6-2, 5-2 gegen 6-1, 7-1 gegen 8-2, 7-2 gegen 8-1. Für das Viertelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger AF1 gegen Sieger AF3, Sieger AF2 gegen Sieger AF4, Sieger AF5 gegen Sieger AF7, Sieger AF6 gegen Sieger AF8. Das Überstehen des Viertelfinales brachte erneut eine Gutschrift von 4 Toren auf die Torkonten der verbleibenden Teilnehmer. Für das Halbfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger VF1 gegen Sieger VF3, Sieger VF2 gegen Sieger VF4. Das Finale bestritten die beiden Sieger des Halbfinales, die Verlierer trugen das Spiel um den 3. Platz aus.

Titelverteidiger des Daniel-Schmitz-Pokals war das Team aus Österreich. Mitfavoriten waren natürlich auch Weltmeister und Gastgeber Schottland sowie die Nationalmannschaften aus der Türkei und aus Dänemark, die in der Weltrangliste nach Schottland und Österreich die besten europäischen Teams waren.

Betreut wurde der Wettbewerb vom WM-Edition-Leiter Ralle.

Bewerbungsschreiben

Hiermit bewerben sich gemeinsam die Ukraine (CasCan) und Bulgarien (Wolfsburger zwei) für die Ausrichtung der EM

Beide Länder vom Verband Südosteuropa haben bisher noch kein solches Turnier ausgerichtet! Jetzt wäre es Zeit dafür. Zahlreiche Investitionen in die Infrastruktur und Fussballstadien wurden getätigt von beiden Ländern. Auch die Verkehrsanbindung sind verbessert wurden, um so deutlich schneller an die Spielorte zu gelangen. Eine Ausrichtung eines solch wichtigen Turniers würde beiden Ländern einen ordentlichen Schub geben.

Über eine positiven Zusage würden sich beide Länder freuen.
